Although I’m a huge fan of JFK, somehow I had never heard this saying until recently. “A rising tide lifts all boats” is beautiful in it’s simplicity. But it’s meaning is deep.
In our society, full of popularity, social media, and numbers, it’s easy to feel like you are constantly competing with the person next to you. But this saying could not be more true. “A rising tide lifts all boats” says that when one of us succeeds, we all succeed. There is room for all of us. One person’s success does not diminish another’s.
When I first started blogging, the thing I was most surprised about is the feeling of camaraderie in this community. It is a community of mostly women, but contrary to popular belief, we’re not out there competing with one another and trying to knock each other down. In fact, I’ve found that it’s just the opposite. I have never worked in a world where everyone is so supportive of one another. The women I have met here have encouraged me, been generous with their wisdom and guidance, and motivated me. They’ve given of their time, shared secrets and tips, and helped me when I’ve needed it the most. All without asking for anything in return.
Whether this blog succeeds or fails, or even if it isn’t here ten years from now, many of the friends I have made during this journey will be. These friends are the physical embodiment of this phrase; the living proof that we do all rise together. That we can give to others, share knowledge, help and guidance, without taking away from our own success.
