Bedroom Refresh – a Study in Neutrals

This mini bedroom refresh was just what our space needed. Some fresh bedding, new nightstands, and different lamps helped to make it feel like a whole new space – no painting needed!

You might have seen on Instagram this week that I partnered with Ballard Designs on a ‘mini’ bedroom refresh, so I thought I’d share all the details here, too!

I’m thrilled with how it turned out. Honestly, it feels like a completely different space and we didn’t even paint!

Our first change was a tweak in the bedding. I didn’t want to replace every piece, just make it feel a little refreshed.

I kept our linen duvet cover because I love that the white provides such a blank canvas to work with. I’ve been eyeing the Pom Pom bedding for awhile now so I knew that was one piece that was going to be added! I chose the ‘natural’ for this all-neutral bed, but it comes in several colors (there’s a Robin’s Egg blue that is gorgeous, too!)

I changed out our quilt that sits at the end of the bed for the Pom Pom quilt in natural, and then added matching Euro shams against the headboard. Over that I layered the printed velvet shams.

I love the contrast of their pattern with the solid, quilted Euros, and the velvet is soo pretty and elegant! To add a pop of bolder color, I finished it off with a block print throw pillow in brown tones.

The new, warmer tones mix beautifully and give the room a cozier vibe. I may go back to the blues next spring, but for now, I’m loving the change.

In addition to the bedding, I changed out the nightstands and the lamps. These nightstands are soo good (and they are on sale for 30% off right now!) They are the perfect size, I love the white wash color (they are quite a bit lighter in person than in my photos), and the adorable gold knobs add just the right finishing touch.

But to be honest, the thing I’m most surprised by is how much I ended up loving the gourd table lamps! I don’t normally go for such a modern silhouette, but these turned out to be one of my favorite things. I love the shape and the neutral cream color is perfect. To me, they modernize the space while still feeling classic and timeless.

You guys know how much I love Ballard Designs! They are by far one of my favorite retailers, so I thought I’d share a few of my favorites that I own and love.

The wood paper towel holder I have in the kitchen is one of the things I get the most questions about on Instagram! (I have the large salad bowl and the serving set from the same line as well).

My French café dining chairs that are in the breakfast room are also from Ballard’s and are a family favorite. They’re sturdy, comfortable and such a classic style. I’ve had them going on 5 years now and they look brand new!

Over that table is also my favorite vintage-style lantern. This lantern gives a great “French vintage” look and is a good price for the size. You might remember it was formally in the family room but I switched things around and it’s now hanging here in the breakfast area. I love it so much, I have it in the office too!

Sometimes their things are higher than other sites, but if you look for sales you can snag a great bargain! They frequently do site wide sales, and if you sign up for emails, they often send 20% off codes. Sharing more of my favorites from them below!

  1. Our primary bedroom is in need of a refresh and I’m LOVING the neutrals you used! Thank you for the inspiration:)

I look forward to your weekly email and blog and love all your ideas and suggestions! And I also am a Ballard lover!

I had a question on the gourd lamps—did you use the small or the large lamps? Trying to gauge sizing next to the bed!

    Thank you! Brittany

    1. Hi Brittany! Thank you so much – I’m so glad you like it! The gourd lamps are the large – which isn’t too large at all. They are the perfect size for a nightstand I think. The smaller ones are pretty small and might be better suited to a dresser or very small nightstand.

      Hope that helps!

  3. Hi Sheila! I tried commenting twice but it’s not coming up . I loooove your updated bedroom refresh! Thank you for sharing. The nightstands are beautiful. The bedding is gorgeous! And the lamps! May I ask if they are the small or the large? The scale of the size is perfect for your headboard.
Thank you for always helping us!

    1. Hi Rose! Your comment is here, but needs to get approved before it appears. The lamps are the large size and are not too large at all. I agree that they are the perfect size for a nightstand!

Thanks so much for reading and for your lovely words. It means so much!

  4. Oh Sheila, this update is beautiful! I love the bedding and the nightstand! This is so cozy. The lamps look perfect! Are they the large or small size! I love them! Thank you for sharing your home with all of us . You always help us to make our homes prettier.
    I am grateful!
    God Bless you ,

  5. That does help, thank you. That’s an excellent point about having the queen size for possible future use on another bed in our home. We only have one CA king but two queens.
I always appreciate your posts and that you are very quick to respond to questions.

    1. haha same here! This way it can be used on either! And you’re so welcome Janet!

  6. Sheila, your bedroom refresh look just beautiful! I especially love the quilt and shams with the little pom poms – a bit out of my price range, but so adorable I might have to consider them. One question I have is regarding the quilt that you (and other decorators/bloggers) put across the foot of the bed: do you purchase a quilt that is the same size as the bed, or a smaller size? We have a CA king, so I’m not sure if I’d use that size quilt, or just a smaller one.
    Enjoy your ‘new’ room!

    1. Hi Janet and thank you so much! Previously the quilt I had on there was a Cal King (as is my bed) and it hung down lower on the sides than this one. This time I actually used a queen. I think it looks fine (just doesn’t go down as far on the sides). This way I saved a little money and I can use it in the guest room if I want to at some point. Whereas if I got a King and wanted to use it elsewhere, it would hang way too low.

      Hope that helps!

Love the refresh and neutrals. I also have purchased many items on Ballard.
Always have loved their quality. I love the fragment over your bed. Can you tell me where you purchased it?

    1. Hi Linda! Thanks for your kind comment, so appreciate it! That fragment was from Aidan Gray but is since discontinued. Sorry I don’t have more info for you!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  8. I love the neutral tones in your bedroom refresh–beautiful! There’s just something about neutral tones that make a room calming and inviting. When my daughter left home, I converted her bedroom into a guest room and used neutral tones very similar to yours. Even though I like how much extra pillows on the bed can add to the overall look of a room, I choose not to use them when decorating, because my bedrooms are small, and stowing them out of the way when someone wants to sleep in the bed isn’t convenient. (I’m getting more and more practical in my old age, LOL!) Thanks for sharing your beautiful refresh!

    1. Haha I get it! I use way less than I used to for sure!
Thanks for stopping by Diane and for your kind words – so appreciate it!
