Friday Favorites – Mad for Plaid

Friday Favorites – Mad for Plaid

Plaid. It’s a fabric that is universally liked. You would never say it’s controversial, or that people “either love it or hate it.” That’s saved for things like neon colors or zebra print.   It’s actually the opposite. Most people like it, and wear it, but don’t give it much thought beyond that. And though I’m typical that way, I own a few shirts and a scarf or two, at Christmas-time, I absolutely adore it!   There is something about a red plaid, whether it be in clothing or decor, that just screams Christmas to me. And though I did a very “neutral” Christmas in my own decor this year, it still has a special place in my heart this time of year.   So =&0=&! Here’s to the holidays, drinking egg nog, dressing up for parties, twinkly lights, packages tied up with string, and plaid, in both clothing and holiday decor☺

Plaid in fashion…..

One of my favorite pins ever! Love the colorful scarf against the camel coat.

I’m seriously in love with this coat! Why am I such a coat person when I live in Southern California???!

Tartain pants! Adorable.
Perfect casual winter day outfit! And those red wellies!!

Possibly the cutest porch scene ever! Perfection. Via Craftberry Bush.

Love the pop this plaid gives to this otherwise very neutral room. And how cute are those window shades?

Just lovely. Via Craftaholics Anonymous.

This is a tablescape I did recently using my new plates from Home Goods. The whole tablescape (with sources) can be seen here.

Via Better Homes and Gardens.

Again, just a touch of plaid in a neutral room can be very sophisticated.

Via Pottery Barn.

Beautiful! Via In Good Taste.

Just a touch in this room really pops. Via Pottery Barn.

Love this tablesetting. Via Williams Sonoma.

Friday Favorites – The Top 7 Best Holiday Scented Candles!

Friday Favorites – The Top 7 Best Holiday Scented Candles!

I absolutely love scented candles, but my two favorites are pumpkin in the fall and holiday scented in the winter. However, I don’t know about any of you, but many times they just don’t meet my expectations. They are either cloyingly sweet, or too strong, or simply non-existent! And since they are usually not cheap, I hate being disappointed once I get them home. Believe me when I tell you I have purchased =&0=& of winter/holiday scented candles! So, today I’m sharing with you my absolute no-fail, perfectly scented, long-lasting holiday scented candles! This way, you don’t have to try them out, or be disappointed, or (worse) waste money. These are=&1=& holiday scented candles around!   So here they are, in no particular order….   The good news is this Balsam & Cedar soy-based candle by Illume smells so good! The bad news is it seems to be sold out in a lot of stores. However, I did find it at

Home for the Holidays Blog Tour – Maison Style

Home for the Holidays Blog Tour – Maison Style

Good morning friends! I am so happy to be part of another Holiday Home Tour! If you’re a regular reader, you know that this is my second tour of the season (my first tour can be seen here). And if you are coming here from my talented friend Kathleen at Lindsay Hill Interiors, thank you! I’m so glad you’re here!   This time fifteen bloggers (yes, 15!) have collaborated to bring you a =&0=& blog tour where we have each decorated our homes for the holidays in our own personal style. From mod, to chic, to transitional, to French country, to farmhouse – there is a style here for everyone! So come on in, take a look around, and get inspired. Also, we have some =&1=& =&2=&news to share! King of Christmas, who is one of our sponsors for this tour, has kindly agreed to giveaway a Christmas tree (details about that at the end of post)!!   I know there are a ton of tours this time of year, and I am so thankful that you’ve decided to stop by ours…… Welcome!
The boxwood wreaths are from Target and the fresh garland and poinsettia are from Home Depot. Other boxwood wreath options available here, here, here, and here.
On my first tour, I shared with you how I’ve been wanting to switch to a more neutral and natural Christmas, which for me meant getting rid of the red. I have used greens, whites, creams, and gold and silver as my colors of the season. I love that they convey Christmas without being over the top.           I’m a huge fan of bottlebrush trees; both vintage and new. I’ve collected them for a few years now and I usually add a couple new ones each year. This year I couldn’t find any vintage ones (so far!) but I did get a few new ones. The ones I purchased at World Market are here, and there are also options here, and here.         I adore mercury glass ornaments and use them in my holiday decor quite a lot. I’ve found some sources for mercury glass ornaments here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. I love the shimmer they give!       In the dining room I again used the mercury glass ornaments, just laid on the table with simple greens I clipped from my yard.             My collection of vintage ironstone mixed with new white dishes is always in the dining room china cabinet, but this season I added some green vases to celebrate the season. And a tiny boxwood wreath! Similar here, and here.         Last year when I began the process of changing to neutral colors,  I purchased new stockings. I can not tell you how excited I was to find these! First of all, I adore burlap, and on top of that, they actually had all the letters that I needed for our names! I found a few similar options this year here, and here.     These vintage looking Santas are another favorite of mine! They are a mix of Home Goods finds with ones purchased at a local antiques store. However, I’ve found them a little more difficult to find this year! I did find some great options here, here, here, and here, and adorable ornament versions here, and here. I just love their old-fashioned charm!         More mercury glass balls in a vintage silver plate bowl.             Mercury glass trees mixed with fresh and faux garland decorate the mantel. I added some pine cones that I collected. Mercury glass tree options here, and here.             An old Restoration Hardware wreath hangs on the mirror over the mantel.         I filled a chippy French urn with white hydrangeas and some greens from Trader Joe’s. I love to mix fresh flowers in my decor no matter what the season. The urn and the pedestal bowl are both vintage. But since vintage ones are so difficult to find, here are a couple reproduction versions that give a similar look here, here and here.     And the central feature of the room is the 9 foot tree so generously provided by our sponsor, King of Christmas!  In the past, I’ve had a live tree in here and a small faux one in the family room. But when I found out that King of Christmas was going to provide us with a tree, I thought I should get one a little taller than we’ve had before and put it in the room that gets seen the most, which is the living room. And I am so happy with how real it looks! Also, this tree was super easy to set-up. We literally took it out of the box and set it up in a matter of ten minutes. And it has a nifty little pedal that you step on to turn on the lights. No more digging around under the tree for the plug… genius!         Last year was the first time I’ve ever used wrapping paper that matched my decor, and I have to say, I’m hooked! I can’t believe I used to have a million different patterns under the tree. Now I use mostly craft paper, with just a few papers that have the greens, golds and creams mixed in and I love how it looks. It is just a simpler, quieter look that really speaks to me right now.         And believe it or not, I’ve never done garland on the stairwell before. This is a first for me! These were from Trader Joe’s and I simply added the burlap ribbon.

A Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour

A Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour

Today I am opening my doors and sharing my home all decorated for the holidays as part of the Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour! I am one of ten bloggers participating and I couldn’t be more excited!    I absolutely love decorating for Christmas. It is definitely something I look forward to, and this year, I really wanted to make a change. I have been loving neutral Christmas decor for awhile now (see my post about that here), and during last year’s tour I talked about my desire to do mostly creams and greens and get rid of the red, so that is what I’ve done this year. It’s such a big change for me! Not only have I always had a lot of red at Christmastime, but I’ve had red in the family room/kitchen area for about 15 years now. And I have to say, I’m loving the result! It’s such a subtle and peaceful look, it really relates to how I’m feeling decor-wise right now. I’m into simplifying in general, and the softer colors of greens, golds and creams fits that. I still love red and white for Christmas, and I’m sure I will do it again, but for now, this has my heart:) The neutral farmhouse Christmas vibe is just speaking to me right now!   For those of you who’ve followed me for awhile now, you know that I try not to buy too much new every year. Much of what I have is something we use over and over; ornaments and decor that we’ve used year after year. I love the traditions that the season brings, and the meaning that those traditions bring. In order to achieve the new color palette, I simply eliminated the items I had that were red; I only had to buy a few new items to fill things out.   So welcome to our home, and come on in!

Farmhouse Inspired Christmas Tour

I used a live tree in the family room with a burlap tree skirt.     This little cabin/house was a find this year at Home Goods. I have bought and collected the little white houses before, but for some reason, this just spoke to me! The frosty white trees are old but these are almost exactly the same!

The urns are Pottery Barn.

A vintage bottlebrush tree in a little vignette with some books and my absolute favorite Christmas candle, Joie de Noel by Votivo. My bottlebrush trees are in every room and I have both vintage and repro – I love both! read more

Styling a Coffee Table – How to Blend Fall and Christmas

Styling a Coffee Table – How to Blend Fall and Christmas

Hi Everyone! And welcome to the second edition of our monthly blog post on styling your coffee table hosted by Janine of Happy Happy Nester! If you are here from Crazy Chic Design, welcome! If you are a regular reader, you might have read last month’s post on styling a fall coffee table. For those of you who might have missed it, every month 15 bloggers will be sharing how to style a coffee table. Well this month, we have a new edition and I’m changing it up! I didn’t want to do a full-on Christmas table just yet, but I definitely felt done with all of my pumpkins! So what to do? To try to bridge the gap between fall and Christmas decorating and do a table that looked slightly wintery. To do this,  I emphasized natural elements with a color scheme of green and white. I wanted to style a table that could last from now through Thanksgiving, but also one that would work for Christmas if you wanted it to.

I decided that pinecones is the new pumpkin! At least for me:) Here an antique French urn is filled with pinecones and seeded eucalyptus.

I like the emphasis on green as I think it works for both holidays, so I added two preserved topiaries and elevated them on a stack of green books. A couple of little silver birds and a tiny green tray on top of the books adds interest. read more

Neutral Fall Decor and How to Incorporate It into Your Home

Neutral Fall Decor and How to Incorporate It into Your Home

I know I’ve said this before (I know!) but I love fall so much! And the last couple of years, I’ve found myself drawn to a more neutral fall decor palette. And since I have to do my Christmas decorating a little earlier this year due to my blog hop coming up, I wanted to touch on fall and Thanksgiving for just a little while longer. At least for this week! After that, I might be forced to give in… read more
