I have friends who hate pink. They hate the color and will not wear it. I have to admit, that is not me. I definitely wear pink. What can I say? I like it. I know the bubble gum variety can be cloying, but in the right shade, it can be downright sophisticated. That’s the key. Use just a touch. And it is universally flattering! Pink makes everyone look good, and what’s wrong with that?
For my money, there is nothing like a great coat to make an outfit. You could be wearing something so simple, and having a dramatic or colorful coat can make the difference between an average outfit and a ‘wow’ outfit. In fact, if you pair it with jeans or neutrals, the coat is the outfit. And in the winter, with rainy, or cold, or just plain dreary weather, it’s great to have that pop of color to add life to your outfit, and your mood!
Scarves are one of the most versatile clothing items you can own. I love how a cold weather scarf can keep you warm, a bandana can add some earthiness, a silk scarf can add a little French style, and a pashmina can be used as a wrap when you are dressed up. I can’t think of very many clothing items that have such versatility. And they’re timeless. When you see them in an old movie, or on an old movie star (like Grace Kelly, below), they still hold up. They don’t look dated. They’re classy, and classic.
Now I know red is a color that is fairly controversial. I used to think you either loved it or hated it. But I’ve realized that that simply can’t be true, because I don’t love or hate it! I actually really like it – in small doses. Do I think a great drop dead red dress can be gorgeous? Definitely. I just don’t ever gravitate to such a big statement color in a big way. In fact, last year for Valentine’s Day my daughter didn’t have anything red to wear for her school spirit day so she was looking in my closet, and it was then that I realized that I literally don’t have any red clothing – not kidding! Not a sweater, blouse, or top to be found. But this is the rub. I love it in accessories! I think a great red bag can make an outfit!
There is nothing like a pop of leopard print to brighten up an outfit! I tend to favor it in accessories rather than in actual clothing items, but I’ll take it either way! And it adds so much to even something as simple as jeans and a t-shirt. In fact, what I love about it the most is the way it can make even a simple outfit look chic!
I love a good denim shirt. It doesn’t matter if it’s thicker denim a la J. Crew with an authentic snap front or a thinner chambray style, they are an all-round, crowd-pleasin’, wear-with-anything staple. I’ve especially loved the trend of the last couple of years of “denim on denim”. Mind you, had you told me a few years before that I would wear mixed denim, I would have thought that there was no way. But I love the look. Personally, I like it more when the denims are not the exact same wash, so that there is some separation between the top and the bottom. But denim shirts are good for more than just the denim-on-denim trend. They are great with white or black. You can dress them up with a great skirt or heels. Or, you can use them with something really dressy to take down the “dressiness” of the other item. And they go really well under a blazer (and we know how much I love those:)) They are just so versatile. And they have an innate ability to look cool and relaxed while still looking pulled together. And who doesn’t like that?
