Valentine’s Day Decor in the Kitchen

Today I wanted to share my kitchen all dressed for Valentine’s Day. Normally, I don’t do a whole lot for this holiday, but this year, I was really feeling the urge. Once Christmas was gone my house was definitely feeling a little uninspiring! That, combined with all the rainy days we’ve had, just put me in the mood to brighten up the house a little. So I broke out a few Valentine’s Day decor items and decided to decorate the kitchen!

Red isn’t a color that works well in most areas of my house as all the blues and greens really throw it off. But since my kitchen is white, I can definitely do it in this room. Restyle and Refresh: 7 Great Living Room Design Ideas

iHi everyone! If you are coming here from my friends Kim and Lacey at Styled with Lace, thanks so much for stopping by! And for those of you who have been here before, welcome back to our monthly blog hop where we touch on different style and design issues each month. In October and November, we each styled a coffee table, in December we all did a tablescape, and now for January, we are talking living room design. I don’t know about all of you, but after Christmas I find I’m kind of in a “design funk.” All the excitement of the holidays is over, and once I’ve taken all the Christmas decor down, my house feels pretty bare. It can feel challenging to decorate in these few months before spring. But instead of letting it get me down, this year, I’m embracing that pared down simplicity. In my living room design, I’ve focused on a clean and simple look, with just a few winter touches to refresh the room.

First, I added a few things that just say winter to me, with the primary one being pinecones. They’re appropriate at Christmas, obviously, but I feel like they cross over into “winter decor” as well. Home for the Holidays Blog Tour – Maison Style

On my first tour, I shared with you how I’ve been wanting to switch to a more neutral and natural Christmas, which for me meant getting rid of the red. I have used greens, whites, creams, and gold and silver as my colors of the season. I love that they convey Christmas without being over the top. I’m a huge fan of bottlebrush trees; both vintage and new. I’ve collected them for a few years now and I usually add a couple new ones each year. This year I couldn’t find any vintage ones (so far!) but I did get a few new ones. The ones I purchased at World Market are here, and there are also options here, and here. I adore mercury glass ornaments and use them in my holiday decor quite a lot. I’ve found some sources for mercury glass ornaments here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. I love the shimmer they give! In the dining room I again used the mercury glass ornaments, just laid on the table with simple greens I clipped from my yard. My collection of vintage ironstone mixed with new white dishes is always in the dining room china cabinet, but this season I added some green vases to celebrate the season. And a tiny boxwood wreath! Similar here, and here. Last year when I began the process of changing to neutral colors, I purchased new stockings. I can not tell you how excited I was to find these! First of all, I adore burlap, and on top of that, they actually had all the letters that I needed for our names! I found a few similar options this year here, and here. These vintage looking Santas are another favorite of mine! They are a mix of Home Goods finds with ones purchased at a local antiques store. A Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour

Today I am opening my doors and sharing my home all decorated for the holidays as part of the Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour! I absolutely love decorating for Christmas. It is definitely something I look forward to, and this year, I really wanted to make a change. I have been loving neutral Christmas decor for awhile now (see my post about that here), and during last year’s tour I talked about my desire to do mostly creams and greens and get rid of the red, so that is what I’ve done this year. It’s such a big change for me! Not only have I always had a lot of red at Christmastime, but I’ve had red in the family room/kitchen area for about 15 years now. And I have to say, I’m loving the result! It’s such a subtle and peaceful look, it really relates to how I’m feeling decor-wise right now. I’m into simplifying in general, and the softer colors of greens, golds and creams fits that. I still love red and white for Christmas, and I’m sure I will do it again someday, but for now, this has my heart. The neutral farmhouse Christmas vibe is just speaking to me right now! For those of you who’ve followed me for awhile now, you know that I try not to buy too much new every year. Much of what I have is something we use over and over; ornaments and decor that we’ve used year after year. I love the traditions that the season brings, and the meaning that those traditions bring. In order to achieve the new color palette, I simply eliminated the items I had that were red; I only had to buy a few new items to fill things out. So welcome to our home, and come on in!

Farmhouse Inspired Christmas Tour

I used a live tree in the family room with a burlap tree skirt. This little cabin/house was a find this year at Home Goods. I have bought and collected the little white houses before, but for some reason, this just spoke to me! The frosty white trees are old but these are almost exactly the same! The urns are Pottery Barn.

A vintage bottlebrush tree in a little vignette with some books and my absolute favorite Christmas candle, Joie de Noel by Votivo. My bottlebrush trees are in every room and I have both vintage and repro – I love both!

More white bottle brush trees in a vintage silver tray. The chippy urn is also vintage. Another antique French urn filled with pine cones and eucalyptus. Candleholders are vintage silver. I love the look of the white chippy urn against the greens and browns. In the kitchen I went with a boxwood wreath. I love the look and the color they bring. I love decorating our range mantel – it’s one of my favorite ways of changing up the decor for the seasons. Here I kept it simple with a small white wreath, an ironstone platter, and two faux little pine trees.

Friday Favorites – Vintage Turkey Plates and Platters

Thanksgiving is one of my absolute favorite holidays, probably second only to Christmas. I love cooking (and eating 😉 ), and tablescaping, so it’s custom made for me! But what I love most is that it’s our only truly American holiday. And because it’s not religious, nearly everyone celebrates it. It’s unifying spirit, as well as the pause it gives us to say thank you for all we have… well, it has my heart. I don’t know when I fell in love with the idea of turkey patterns, specifically vintage turkey plates and platters, but probably somewhere around the time I got into collecting different plates for the holidays. I love how sweet and old-fashioned they are. And really, there isn’t much “decor” to be found for Thanksgiving, and this gives me something to display that I love! They’re fun to collect, and utterly charming, which is why I find I buy a few more each year. But I figure that’s good, right? Eventually when I have children who have spouses and maybe even grandchildren, I’ll have enough so that we can all use them around a huge Thanksgiving dinner table 🙂

This year I displayed my Williams Sonoma turkey platter on the kitchen mantel. This platter is not vintage, but it does have a vintage feel and it was on sale, so I couldn’t resist! I linked some similar ones below since this is now sold out. read more
