The Best Way to Clean Your Hardwood Floors
As I’m sure some of you remember, we installed the hardwood floors in our living and dining rooms only about a year and a half ago. We had wall to wall carpet (ugh!) until then, and I’d been dying to change them. And I have to say, it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever done! You can see the full reveal of them here.
And though I absolutely love our floors, because we went with a medium brown stain, and we have a Golden Retriever (read: hair!!), I was concerned about how I would keep my hardwood floors clean. That is, until I discovered the Bona® cleaning system! Bona® was actually recommended to me by my floor installer, and I’m so glad he told me about it. I have been a fan since the first day I used it, and it is absolutely the best way to clean hardwood floors!
In fact, one of the questions I get asked the most when I share my home on Instagram, is how my floors look so clean with a Golden in the house! So today I thought I would address that, and share with you how I clean my hardwood floors. The Bona® system is my key to keeping my hardwood floors looking good everyday. There is truly no way I could keep my floors looking as good as they do without it!
When I’m doing my weekly cleaning, I always reach for the Bona Power Plus® Hardwood Floor Deep Cleaner spray. I use that with the Bona® Microfiber mop (which has an extra-wide head making it so easy to cover large areas quickly) and the microfiber cleaning pad. The pads are also removable for easy washing – love that. Not only taking up all the dog hair, but any dust and dirt that might be on the floor as well. It does the job easily and effectively, and without harsh chemicals. Avoiding toxic chemicals in my home is important to me, and Bona®’s Greenguard Gold certification let’s me know that it is safe around children and animals (since you know Hudson spends pretty much all of his life on these floors!)
Ironically, when we bought our former house it had the original hardwood floors that we had refinished at the time. Unfortunately, in just a short time they started to show a lot of wear and the finish was actually peeling off in spots! My installer at the time told me that I should “just use water,” which is what I did. I damp mopped them weekly, and now I’ve come to find out that that is about the worst thing I could have done.
Using water, vinegar and water, and some other homemade cleaners can actually damage your wood floors. On the other hand, Bona® is made specifically for hardwood floors. (They also make a stone, tile, and laminate cleaner as well!)
How to Deep Clean Your Hardwood Floors
-
Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! You want to do this frequently, and definitely before you do any mopping. The vacuum will get up a lot of the larger grit, and then you can use the Bona® system to do the really deep cleaning.
-
Spray the Bona Power Plus® Hardwood Floor Deep Cleaner spray lightly but thoroughly over the area in front of you, and mop with the Bona® Microfiber mop. Continue with this until you’ve gone over all the hardwood floor areas.
- Sit back and enjoy your clean floors!

Are ur floors real wood or laminate I have laminated I vac and use a steam mop with bota but they never seem clean help
My floors are real wood, as Bona is specifically made for hardwoods. I can’t speak to laminate, but I do know Bona makes a different cleaner for those. Hope that helps!
I don’t have wood floors but I just wanted to say that your home is gorgeous. So serene and calming. Great job!
Aww, that is so nice – thanks so much Maggie!
And thank you for taking the time to comment, I so appreciate it!

Thanks for the great advice. I’ve always used water too. And I have two Goldens in my house….speaking of hair ! Your floors look great. IAM going to check up on this cleaner. Thanks again and tell Hudson my Goldens say Hello
You’re so welcome! I do think a lot of people use water and don’t realize how damaging it can be!
Thanks for stopping by my fellow Golden lover:)
