Dining Table Decor Ideas for Everyday

In this post we’re sharing dining table decor ideas for everyday, with lots of creative ways to decorate your dining table when it’s not in use!

Design by Marie Flanigan.

It’s pretty easy for most of us to decorate our dining tables when it comes to hosting dinners, holiday celebrations, or the like. When there is a theme involved, the choices are more obvious.

But what about everyday decor? Do you struggle with exactly what to put on your dining table when it’s not in use?

On the one hand, there are those that like to keep the table ‘set’ even when no one is arriving, with a full table set for 6 or 8 people. While others use it as a dumping ground for excess papers, magazines, and things on the to-do list.

To me, your dining table should be somewhere in between those two extremes! Ideally, it should add to your overall space and be cohesive with the rest of your decor. You want to bring beauty to the space, just like you do with console or coffee table styling.

There are lots of options when it comes dining table decor ideas, and today we’re sharing some of my favorites.

One Large Statement Item

One large item displayed in the center of the dining table always makes a statement when it comes to styling your dining table for everyday.

In this scenario, there are lots of choices. But whether it’s a large vase holding flowers or an oversized bowl, bigger and bolder is the way to go.

For this look, you definitely want to go with a larger sized item. A small or medium sized item may feel a little lonely in the center of a table!

Love this large shell-type bowl – it really makes statement all on its own!

A Trio of 3 Objects

This works best with a grouping of like items such as candlesticks, bowls, or vases.

2 or 3 Unrelated Items

Much like the trio, here we’re using three items (or two), however, they aren’t all the same items which creates a less formal feel than the trio.

I love this because it feels a little more relaxed than just one item yet it’s not messy or overdone, either.

Casual or ‘Vignette Styling’

This dining table decor choice is probably my personal favorite. In this scenario, a grouping becomes something that reflects real life. And though it may look unplanned, it’s actually much harder to get right!

Design by Ohara Davies-Gaetano.

The vignette needs to look natural, not planned. Like someone casually left a bowl on the table, or a few petals have fallen off of the flowers.

In this case, three to five objects creates the right look, anything more will feel way too busy – and a little too much like messy real life!

It’s also important to vary the height of the items you’re choosing. Something tall should be included, like a vase or candlestick. As well as a few things that are closer to the table such as bowls or trays.

And it never hurts to add something green. Whether that’s fruit or vegetables in a bowl, or flowers in a vase, having something natural on the table brings life to the space!

Dining items like stacks of plates or bowls look great, just make sure you aren’t actually setting the table! You want it to look casual, not too arranged or staged.

To me this is perfect! Start with some ‘alive’ items (artichokes), add a vase with simple flowers, and finish with a pair of pretty candlesticks. (I spy our new living room chandelier!)

I hope this was helpful in giving you lots of dining table decor ideas for when it’s not in use, which for many of us, is most of the time! From a simple statement vase to a casual vignette, you can create a look that speaks to you and elevates the space.
