Laundry Room Makeover Reveal

Come see how we turned our dingy and disorganized garage laundry area into a pretty and functional space in our laundry room makeover reveal!

Our former laundry area was in the garage and not very pleasant. It was dank, and somewhat dark, and it was also sharing space with overflowing storage shelves. We had to iron, steam, and fold laundry elsewhere as there wasn’t room to actually do it in the laundry space!

It felt so crowded and made a chore that isn’t that fun a whole lot less fun! All in all, it wasn’t really doing its job.

So, we decided to give it a complete, but affordable, overhaul using Ikea cabinets and DIY flooring. Most importantly, we wanted to have more room to actually do laundry and give it a bright and pretty refresh.

So let’s start with the awful before (always fun, right?!)

 

As you can see, the laundry area was stuffed to the brim, with no room to do anything other than put clothing into the washer or take it out of the dryer. The storage shelves took up one whole wall and left no room for much else.

 

The only storage in the whole space was a couple of cabinets on the washer side, which wasn’t nearly enough. And the water heater was visible and unsightly.

We knew we wanted to create a space that would help with our goals of a more attractive space, as well as one that functioned better.

 

Must Haves for the Laundry Room Makeover:

1. Get rid of the storage shelves in that area, freeing up an entire wall.
2. Build a cabinet around the water heater to hide it.
3. Relocate the dryer vent.
4. Add lots of cabinet space, including a tall cabinet to hold the ironing board.
5. Create an area for folding laundry with a large countertop.

 

Since we didn’t want to spend a ton of money (I mean it is in the garage after all!), we decided to go with Ikea cabinets. We also chose a peel-and-stick floor that was inexpensive and easy to install.

 

The peel and stick Floor Pops give a marble look and are perfect for a garage space like this! They can withstand product spills, water leaks, or any of the other things that might happen in a laundry room. I chose the grey and white and couldn’t be happier with how they turned out!

 

By choosing Ikea cabinets, we were able to add so much storage to this space for an affordable price. Including a very tall cabinet that now holds not only the ironing board, but also the steamer!

 

We also added a long butcher block counter that has lots of room for folding and organizing. 

 

The counter is about 6′ feet long and has enough room to hold supplies and decor, too!

 

But my favorite thing is probably the hampers! I love the vintage/industrial look of these and knew I wanted to include them in our laundry room makeover. We actually sized the counter so that we could fit three of them.

I can’t tell you how much I wish we had these when all three kids were home and I was doing loads and loads every week! They are roomy and very high quality – they will seriously last for years!

 

We also included some open shelving to hold towels and extra supplies. I really wanted to add a bar for hanging laundry but we just never got to it. I always imagined that I would add it at some point down the road.

 

A drying rack was another thing I really wanted, and I love this one with the beadboard. Not only is it cute but it’s practical and I’ve been using it all the time!

 

For the hardware I chose these unlacquered brass knobs and handles. I have a brass faucet in the powder room and loved it so I knew I’d be using it here. They also bring lots of warmth to all the white cabinetry.

We were also able to build a simple cabinet to house the water heater! It’s probably the thing that made the biggest difference.

 

We managed to turn this overcrowded and unsightly area into a bright and clean space with tons of storage. Honestly, there are so many cabinets in here now, some of them are actually empty!
