One Room Challenge Week 3: Paint Decisions & Furniture Choices

Follow along as we embark on the One Room Challenge! Each week we’ll be updating you on the progress of our new French-inspired guest room plan!

Hi friends and welcome to week #3 of the One Room Challenge and our new guest room plan! I actually thought I’d be revealing the paint this week but alas, that is not the case. Between my husband being out of town and my back injury, it has put us back quite a bit!

So this week our update is more about decisions than actual work being done, but at least we’ve made some progress! A lot of the last week was spent shopping and researching. But before I show you some of the pretties that have been decided on, I’m going to walk you through what all needs to be done on the project.

Guest Bedroom To Do

1. Decide paint color & prime and paint room
2. Install new light fixture
3. Decide if I’m adding drapes and if so, choose color/style
4. If doing drapes, install rods and drapes
5. Decide between bench at foot of bed or dresser – not room for both!
6. Build bed
7. Hang all artwork
8. Decide if I’m using the mirror I already own, or no
9. Decide on throw pillows/color combo
10. Clean out closet and make it ‘guest ready’ (as right now it is full of overflow clothing and throw pillows!)

Guest Bedroom To Buy

1. Area rug
2. All Bedding/Throw pillows
3. Ceiling fixture
4. Artwork for walls over nightstands and for opposite wall (if not using mirror)
5. Bedside lamps
7. Nightstands
8. Headboard or bed – I can do either since we already have a bed frame
9. Dresser or bench
10. Drapes, if doing

One Room Challenge – Week 3 Progress

The good news? A few things have been ordered and/or decided!

I’ve decided on these gorgeous nightstands! There were only a few options in the running as I’m limited by space and these just really spoke to me. They’re more than the others I looked at, but I feel like they really set the tone for the space and I love the simple Gustavian style.

I also need to make a decision about the bed this week. There are three I’m considering. There are two gorgeous French style options that I love, but they are more expensive: this one and this one. The other option is this simple slipcovered bed (this can be ordered in a headboard as well).

While I’d really love one of the French ones, I’m leaning toward the simple slipcovered option (this is also the one I have in the mood board). First of all, I don’t want the room to start skewing too feminine. I’m not sure who will be staying in here every time, but since I have two sons I’m guessing they will be in here at some point and I want them to feel comfortable.

And also, it’s much less expensive, which leaves more money for all the other items. But I do need to decide this week because the slipcovered one takes six weeks!

But the thing I’m really struggling with is the ceiling fixture. I tend to prefer a chandelier but my ceilings are only 8 feet high and since this will be something people have to walk under, I’m forced to find a flush mount or semi-flush mount type. And that is not easy as most of them are so ugly! So far I’ve only seen a couple that I like. TBD!

And now let’s talk paint!

As I mentioned in my original post, I’m leaning toward a gorgeous grayish blue color. I saw Pigeon by Farrow & Ball and was completely smitten! I love that the color is actually hard to define. Depending on the lighting or the space it’s in, it can look like a grayish green or a grayish blue, which means it will take on whatever color you put it with.

They actually classify the color as a blue, but in this room, it definitely skews more green, albeit a grayish/blueish green.

Once I had all the colors on the wall, I narrowed it down to two, Pigeon at 50% or Oil Cloth at 50%. But I think I’m going with the Pigeon as it is more blue than the Oil Cloth and again, I love that it’s harder to pin down. It has a undefinable quality that I just love!

I’m leaning towards doing it in 50% strength as I think the straight color will be too dark. It’s already a big leap for me to be doing a color rather than a neutral, so I think the 50% is a good compromise. Let’s hope I don’t freak out once it’s on the walls! (And if I do freak out as decide to do a neutral instead, it will be Edgecomb Grey).
