French Farmhouse Summer Decorating Ideas-Living & Dining Room Tour

Is it summer where you are yet? It’s definitely arrived here! We went from our gloomy May and June mornings to it being almost 90 degrees today! And believe me, I’m not complaining. I’ve been wanting some sunshine and warmth for months now, so it feels delicious. (Though when you speak to me in August, I might not be feeling quite as happy about it, haha!) 😉

Today I’m joining Krista at The Happy Housie for her fun seasonal tour, and there are lots of other bloggers sharing summer decorating ideas as well! If you’re landing here from my friend Janet’s, welcome. Today I’m sharing my living and dining rooms decorated for summer.

So grab something cold to drink, and come on in! I’ve sprinkled around some blue and white (as well as some peonies!), and I’m ready for summer!

Simple Summer Decorating Ideas

I’m definitely not one to do a ton of decorating for summer. In fact, just the opposite. Summer feels like the antithesis of that. Summer decorating should be simple above all else! But I do admit, I like to change things out a little for each season, and that goes for summer, too!

I changed things out on the mantel slightly, adding a plant and some blue colored books. Subtle changes, but ones that help it feel a little more summery. Some coral was also added to the two chests on either side of the fireplace.

Bring out the Blue!

For me, summer is all about bringing out the blue! There is just nothing that feels as crisp and fresh as the classic combo of blue and white. And since I don’t normally have a ton of blue in this room, it’s fun to add it this time of year.

The blue printed pillows are the only new item I added. I found them on an incredible sale at Pottery Barn and I couldn’t resist! They look so good with the ginger jars, and I love the pop the blue brings to the otherwise neutral room.

I’ve definitely been crushing on ginger jars this year! They’re such a classic, and their blue and white palette fits right in with my summer decor. I also did a simple summer tablescape using them last month which you can check out here.

Flowers (Fresh or Faux)

And peonies!! Peonies are my absolute favorite flower, so come June each year, I’m stalking my local Trader Joe’s every week anxious for them to arrive! There is just something so wonderful about their fluffy cabbage-like blooms. I’m not exaggerating when I say they bring a smile to my face each time I look at them 🙂

Shells (or other seasonal items)

Shells are another thing I love to bring out each year. I’ve put them in ironstone bowls, silver bowls, dough bowls, you name it! They’re such an easy way to bring some summer into a room. And you can either collect them for free, or buy them fairly inexpensively. Mine are both – some found, and some bought. And this year, I added them to this large white wooden bowl on the coffee table.

In the dining room, I added a fern to the urn that sits on the dining table. I usually have flowers in it, but I’m loving the freshness that the plant adds to the space.

I also moved my marble eggs to this room. All through the spring they live in the living room, but this year I removed all the eggs that weren’t blue or white and moved them here. Just a touch of blue in here helps tie it to the living room.

Your home is beautiful. Your pooch has such lovely hair and looks like he is posing for the picture. How do you keep dog hair off everything? You must keep a “Dust Buster” in your hands all the time! Have a great week!

    1. Well, thank you Cecelia! And my house does have dog hair believe me!! He isn’t allowed on the furniture so it is at least limited to the floor area, but I usually vacuum or at the very least sweep, every single day! It’s just part of having Goldens!

Thanks so much for your kind words and for stopping by!
