There are times that I (and I’m assuming, everyone) feel helpless. I feel like anything I do in terms of “making a difference” is too small, just a drop in the bucket. But this quote, it challenges that belief. Changes it. Because everything we do to change the world, however small, matters. Not just our deeds, but our words, too.
I can’t think of a better description of motherhood. I know I’m not the perfect mother. Many times I come up short, more often than I care to admit. But I always, always put my children’s happiness and well-being before my own. They are my life. And there is nothing I take more seriously than the job of raising them.
This quote is not new to me, as I actually have a little plaque in my office with this saying painted on it. And it is such a good reminder. Never get so busy with your work that you forget to make a life.
I think this is actually easier to do than one would think. We are all so busy. I don’t know anyone who isn’t busy! We live in a society that insists that we keep going, and keep pushing; because of our smart phones, our jobs never really end. And as a result, time passes, no flies, by. We’ve all heard stories of people in their old age lamenting the time they wasted focused on work. There is a danger in that. We can become so consumed by just making through each day, each week, that pretty soon, years have gone by without our realizing it. And we don’t get those back. There is no “re-do” when it comes to our lives.
Happiness is contagious. Something we all know but I think is easy to forget. When others are happy, their happiness spreads. And likewise, when we are happy, ours spreads to those around us.
Cheerful people always cheer me up, and I’m going to try to remember that. If I’m cheerful and upbeat most of the time, my children will see that happiness modeled for them. Likewise, if I’m unhappy, find fault with everything, and am complaining most of the time, my children will see that modeled.
Although I’m a huge fan of JFK, somehow I had never heard this saying until recently. “A rising tide lifts all boats” is beautiful in it’s simplicity. But it’s meaning is deep.
In our society, full of popularity, social media, and numbers, it’s easy to feel like you are constantly competing with the person next to you. But this saying could not be more true. “A rising tide lifts all boats” says that when one of us succeeds, we all succeed. There is room for all of us. One person’s success does not diminish another’s.
This quote has always resonated with me. It’s a philosophy that I feel deeply, and one that I try to live everyday. I know I don’t achieve it all the time, but it is always my goal. Imagine what the world would be like if everyone tried to be kind, all the time, to everyone else. To listen. To empathize. I think the world would look very different.
