Sometimes the importance of a father is overshadowed by that of the mother. But the role of a father is essential for so many reasons, and shapes us in ways we are not always aware of. So much so that those children who grow up without one are dramatically affected by that loss.
I was not particularly close to my father, and yet when he died, I realized the profound affect he had had on my life. It made me realize something. If someone who wasn’t even a particularly involved father could have that amount of influence, imagine what an involved and loving father can do for his children.
And watching my husband with our kids, I am utterly amazed. To have a father who cares, who is involved, who loves them unconditionally, and who is invested, is without equal. My children adore him, and I am thankful every day for the support and love that he gives them.
They have no idea how lucky they are, but I do.
Happy Father’s Day to my husband. And to all the fathers (and father figures) out there who take the time to be a dad. Their influence and contribution cannot be underestimated.
